A 35-year-old soldier from Michigan who was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) died Thursday in a vehicle collision with a base guard shack near the front gate.
According to JBLM officials, 35-year-old Spc. Ryan Abbott of Grand Rapids, MI had been stationed at JBLM for approximately two years before Thursday morning’s incident. He was driving on East Gate Road near the base when his vehicle crashed into an empty guard shack just before 5 a.m.
Officials are still unsure what caused the man to crash his vehicle into the guard shack. An investigation is ongoing.
