The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association reports that traditional motor home sales has grown at a 6.2% rate this year, with two smaller classes encompassing large van conversions growing nearly twice as fast.
"The era of bigger-is-better and more ostentatious" is over, declares RVIA President Richard Coon. Now, "The trend is toned down quite a bit."
This could be due to the economy and gas prices, yet it may also make the roads safer.
"Fuel prices are driving it, but this is a cultural shift," says Bob Wheeler, CEO of Airstream, which converts delivery-van-style Mercedes-Benz Sprinters into low-key motor homes.
"There's a shift away from conspicuous consumption."
The
smaller motor homes make it easier to stay in the skinny lanes on the busy highways and are easy to maneuver.
Other motorhome buyers say that they are more versatile, such as to bring to a little league game.
Recreational Vehicle Accident Statistics
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported in 2003 over 70,000 people hurt in RV accidents. The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that in 2003 there were thousands of fatal accidents.
