Seattle Police Officer with Brain Damage Loses Insurance | Washington State Traumatic Brain Injury Lawyer
Seattle Police Officer John McKissack, a husband and father suffered a traumatic brain injury and is losing his medical benefits. He pledged to protect the public but now no one is protecting his family.
In June of 2008, McKissack came across two teens fighting and tried to break it up. Instead, the two turned against the officer. The brutal beating he received left him fighting for his life.
The attack severely damaged his brain causing McKissack's balance to be unstable and his brain to no longer compute like it did before the brutal assault. Doctors have said that McKissack will never be a police officer again and it's very likely he won't be able to hold down a job.
Since he can no longer be an officer, he can't keep his medical benefits. The only way his family can keep their benefits is if McKissack had been killed in the line of duty.
McKissack is living off a paycheck from the State Department of Labor and Industries that is nearly 40 percent less than his old paycheck, causing him to choose between paying for private medical insurance or his mortgage.
The Seattle Police Officer's Guild can cover MCKissack's private health insurance for just a few months more. The guild is demanding state lawmakers change the law.
