The Seattle Police Department announced that it intends to deploy a camera-equipped van next month to catch school-zone speeders. Violators will get a warning until Labor Day and then a $198 ticket will be issued.
The van will be used in numerous school zones throughout Seattle. However, drivers must be warned that the van and camera is being used in the area. Presumably, this will be accomplished by using signs on the roadway. Violators will be caught on camera and then citations will be issued in the mail.
Depending on the results of this program, Seattle politicians may order additional camera-equipped vans in the future. The program is designed to cut down on school zone accidents, which can cause tragic results involving small children. I think the idea is a good one if it forces drivers to slow down in school zones. We'll see how it turns out.
