BELLEVUE - A 4-year-old boy was backed over by a Toyota Corolla in a church parking lot and taken to Harborview Medical Center. The accident happened near the 14400 block of Northeast Eighth Street. It's unclear what the boy was doing at the time he was hit. Apparently the driver of the Toyota was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
NOTE: We covered the issue of children and back-over accidents in our April 2008 Newsletter. According to research by Kids and Cars – an organization devoted to preventing (non-traffic) motor-vehicle-related deaths and injuries to children – 49% of the non-traffic, noncrash fatalities involving children under 15 from 2001–2005 were caused by vehicles that were backing up.
You can learn more about pedestrian collisions on our pedestrian accident practice area page.
Lynwood - A Snohomish County man riding a motorcycle died after an accident near Lynnwood. Apparently his 2006 Harley Davidson crashed into a concrete sign post. The accident happened at the intersection of 140th Street Southwest and 64th Avenue West. The man was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.
NOTE: It is unfortunate that the driver was not wearing a helmet. We have an interesting article in our firm library that addresses this issue: FACTS & FIGURES: Motorcycle Helmet Use Laws. According to a study, Motorcyclists are 32 times more likely to be killed in an accident than car passengers per vehicle mile driven. More than half of motorcycle accidents result from collisions with other vehicles. These statistics highlight the importance of determining fault and insurance requirements in motorcycle accidents.
