One man is dead after a fiery head-on collision July 9 on U.S. Highway 2. The driver of a small pickup truck collided with a patrol car carrying a suspect and driven by a Snohomish County Sheriff's deputy. The collision took place at 4:08 a.m. near the Roosevelt Road intersection with U.S. Highway 2. The driver of the 1986 Nissan pickup died at the scene after his vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. It is believed by investigators that the driver of the pickup truck crossed the center line, but this has not yet been confirmed.
The identity of the man and the exact cause of death are still being investigated by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner as of July 9. Because the truck was completely immersed in flames, identifying the man may take some time. The sheriff's deputy, James Headrick, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and is currently in stable condition. The suspect was taken to the Colby campus of Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett and was released later that afternoon. Both were conscious when extricated by cutting the police car roof open. U.S. Highway 2 was closed for six and a half hours after the incident.
The crash was the first major car accident in 28 days. More than 45 people have lost their lives on the stretch of highway between Everett and Skykomish in the past 10 years.
