Type: Car Accident
Date: January 3, 2010, 01/03/10
Location: South of Ephrata
Outcome: One fatality
A Grant County Police Officer was killed in a one-car accident Sunday evening just south of Ephrata.
Deputy John Bernard of Moses Lake died at the scene of the accident around 7:20 p.m. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Rich Magnussen, a major accident investigation team from Seattle is in charge of the case. The road was wet but there was no snow or ice.
Deputy Bernard was wearing his seat belt and had just cleared a call shortly before the accident took place, but he was not on his way to an emergency.
Bernard was with the sheriff's office for four years.
He had also worked as an Ephrata Police Officer and a Grant County Corrections Officer.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends Deputy Bernard left behind.
