A Walla Walla police officer was injured after he was drug by a vehicle in a routine traffic stop Monday night.

The officer suffered from a broken thumb.

The injury took place when the officer attempted to pull over a pickup truck that was following too close and driving too fast for the icy and snowy conditions on the road.

The officer was attempting to turn off the ignition in the truck when the driver sped off, dragging him in the oncoming lane of traffic. He was dragged more than 200 feet before the driver was stopped after another officer fired a shot into the truck.

The driver of the truck, Jason K. Spencer of Walla Walla was taken into custody after the officers used a stun gun for investigation of drunken driving and assault.
