Target Zero is a plan that is based on reducing traffic accidents and fatalities by year 2030. Target Zero has several strategies to completely diminish this problem in the U.S. The strategies were developed using national-level research, existing pilot programs, and input from many statewide stakeholders. Many
strategies in Target Zero have proven effective, been professionally evaluated and deemed successful in Washington or in other states or countries.
Target Zero's strategies focus on the Four "E's":
Education: Give drivers the information to make the best choices.
Enforcement: Use driver behavior data to help law-enforcement officers pinpoint locations with a high number of serious collisions.
Engineering: Use best practices to
prevent or reduce the severity of collisions.
Emergency Medical Services: Provide high-quality and rapid emergency and medical response to injury collisions
To reach the goal of zero traffic fatalities by 2030 will require a decrease of 25 fatalities per year.
The plan started in 2010.
Priority One includes alcohol and/or drug impaired driver: drinking driver involved, alcohol impaired driver involved drug impaired driver involved; run off the road; and speeding involved.
Priority Two includes young drivers: drivers 21-25; drivers 16-20; unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant; distracted driver involved; intersection related; and traffic data systems.
Priority Three includes unlicensed driver involved; opposite direction
multi-vehicle collisions; motorcyclists including unendorsed motorcycle operator and un-helmeted motorcyclist; pedestrian; heavy truck; an emergency medical services.
Priority Four includes older driver involved; drowsy driver involved; bicyclist; work zone; wildlife; vehicle-train involved; school bus-related; and aggressive driver involved. Trends in Washington’s traffic deaths over the past ten years provide an overview of our traffic safety progress.
