When you see an officer pulled over to the side of the road, or an auto accident do you make a conscious effort to move into another lane that is further away from the shoulder of the road? If so, the National Safety Commission would like to thank you for doing your part in keeping out officers safe on the job. You have not been making an effort to move over or at least slow down, please begin to do so. The Move Over, America campaign has been started to increase awareness of the dangers that officers face every day when making routine traffic stops as well as the importance of every one doing their part to keep our police officers safe
Since 1999, 150 police officers have lost their lives while making routine traffic stops because they were struck by vehicle passing by. This fact is not acceptable. Officers make routine traffic stops everyday and should not feel that their lives are in danger every time they do so. In Washington State, the Move Over law was implemented in 2005, making it illegal to for drivers to not at least slow down when passing an officer that is pulled over.
If everyone does their part by moving over when they see an officer stopped along side the road, we can greatly reduce, or hopefully eliminate roadside deaths of police officers. These men and women put their lives on the line everyday to keep us safe, it is up to us to do our best to keep them safe as well.
As one of Seattle, Renton, and Bellevue's most respected personal injury lawyers, Chris Davis and the Law Group urge you to make an extra effort to follow this law. We have lost too many police officers in the last year in on-the-job shootings and accidents. To put any others at risk by being negligent behnd the wheel is risk we in Washington State cannot afford to take.
