The Washington State Patrol has reported that 80 percent of all motorcycle fatalities in the state were the result of rider error, the most common causes being excessive speed and lane errors, usually a rider unable to negotiate a curve safely.
Many believe that rising gas prices are increasing the popularity of motorcycles and that rookie riders on the the increased number of inexperienced riders on the road are driving up the number of motorcycle accidents and car accidents involving motorcycles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nationally motorcycle deaths in 2007 increased for the 10th consecutive year. With 5,154 motorcycle fatalities nationwide. That's 317 more than the previous year. Ten years earlier, in 1997, there were 2,116 motorcycle deaths nationally.
