Every single day, hundreds of people lose a limb due to disease, trauma and cancer. Due to these statistics, some states have declared April as Limb Loss Awareness Month in honor of the victims who have lost a limb.
Sixty percent of limb losses are
preventable with 507 people losing a limb every day.
Knoxville-based nonprofit The Amputee Coalition, a is sponsoring an awareness campaign nationwide with April as Limb Loss Awareness Month and offering an online risk assessment for limb loss.
"Limb loss is not uncommon and, sadly, becoming less uncommon every day," said Kendra Calhoun, president & CEO of the Amputee Coalition. "More than 2 million Americans live with limb loss and that number grows by 185,000 each year."
During every month of April nationwide, amputee support groups, veterans, prosthetics, rehabilitation centers and those with
limb loss will be a part of activities in their local areas to raise awareness.
Limb Loss Statistics
- 60 percent of limb loss is preventable.
- 600 children lose a limb due to lawnmower accidents each year.
- In 2008, hospital fees with having a limb amputated totaled more than $7.2 billion in healthcare costs
- Nearly 60 percent of the amputation procedures performed in 2008 were paid for by Medicaid and Medicare, totaling more than $5.2 billion in healthcare costs.
- 75 percent of pediatric amputations are due to trauma.
