The month of March begins a 31-day campaign put on by the Brain Injury Association (BIAA) to promote and educate people on Brain Injury Awareness. throughout the nation. The theme of this year's campaign is " A concussion is a brain injury. Get the facts."
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 3.8 million sports and recreation related brain injuries take place each year in the United States. U.S. emergency crews treat about 135,000 sports and recreation related Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI's) including kids between the ages of 5 and 18.
BIAA is a huge advocate of wanting coaches of every school's sports teams and children's extracurricular activities to be trained to recognize the symptoms of traumatic brain injuries which includes concussions and second impact syndrome. BIAA also wants young athletes who have had a concussion to have written permission from their doctor before they can return to playing sports.
A concussion is caused by a bump or blow to the head or from the body that causes one's head to move back and forth in a violent manner.
According to the Center for Disease Control, the majority of concussions occur without a loss of consciousness and could result in serious long-term side effects if not properly diagnosed. Sometimes signs of a concussion can take days or even weeks before they show up.
If you or your child has received brain injuries due to a misdiagnosis or negligence of a third party, it would be in your best interest to speak with an experienced traumatic brain injury lawyer like Christopher Davis for a free no obligation legal consultation of your traumatic brain injury case.
