A single-car accident was reported to Washington State Patrol shortly after 9 p.m. involving a male who had lost control of his vehicle while driving on Cathcart Way in south Snohomish. According to reports, the man's car was traveling east on Cathcart Way when it slid through the Highway 9 intersection and struck a tree. The man's identity has not been released to the press but State Patrol believes that speed was the main reason for the crash and the driver most likely died on impact.

From 1996-2005, 2,141 drivers were involved in speeding-related fatal collisions in Washington State. The trends related to speeding within Washington State remain relatively consistent with 35% to 67% of observed vehicles traveling at or above the posted speed on all highways combined.

Washington State Speeding Laws

No person shall drive a vehicle on a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing. In every event speed shall be so controlled as may be necessary to avoid colliding with any person, vehicle or other conveyance on or entering the highway in compliance with legal requirements and the duty of all persons to use due care.
