Type: Snowmobile accidentOutcome: One hospitalized
A 58-year-old man from Covington was seriously injured when he drove his snowmobile into a tree Saturday afternoon near Salmon La Sac Sno-Park in Kittitas County. Authorities were able to reach the victim over three hours after the accident was called in and hoisted him from the scene by helicopter.
Originally taken to Kittitas Valley Community Hospital, the victim, Patrick Kirk, had to be airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. Kirk was a seasoned snowmobile rider and was wearing a helmet and protective gear at the time of the crash. The cause is still unclear but it has been confirmed that he crashed into a tree while heading downhill at a fast rate of speed. Kittitas County Sheriff's Office is looking into whether or not alcohol or drugs were also a factor.
As of Monday, a Harborview spokesperson reported that Kirk was still in serious condition in the intensive care unit.
National Snowmobile Accident StatisticsEach year snowmobile accidents produce approximately 200 deaths and 14,000 injuries. Excess speed, alcohol, driver inexperience, and poor judgment are the leading causes of accidents.
