A Washington State Patrol trooper had pulled over to assist a disabled vehicle on a two-lane stretch of Interstate 5 in Skagit County when a 33-year-old male driving a Honda Civic hit his patrol car.
In a Tuesday morning press conference, Washington State Patrol announced that drivers who do not give emergency vehicles the right of way and at least 200 feet of space when parked will have an increased fine that is effective January 1st. The current fine is $124 for people who fail to slow down or pull over safely but that will increase to $248.
Emergency Vehicle Accident Statistics According to the Highway Traffic Safety Administration 170 people were killed and 18,772 people were injured in emergency vehicle crashes in 2004 nationwide.
