Date: October 31, 2008
Location: I-5
Accident Type: Car Accident
There were more than 10 car accidents on Interstate 5 through Bellingham which slowed traffic on Friday. Apparently a tanker truck from a local refinery had been leaking oil or diesel fuel on the southbound lanes in Bellingham causing slick road conditions. The Washington State Department of Transportion spread sand on the stretch of highway to provide more traction to motorists.
The majority of the wrecks were minor and caused only minor injuries. Most occurred in the southbound lanes of I-5 through Bellingham. Cars spun out as drivers tried to brake on the slick road. Cars hit other vehicles, signs and guardrails. Rubberneckers in the northbound lanes were distracted and caused a few accidents in the other direction.
