DogsBite.org recently released their count of dog bite fatalities in the United States for 2011. In the report, they found that there were 31 fatal dog attacks in the United States in 2011. Of the 31 total fatalities, pit bulls contributed to over 67 percent of the deaths despite accounting for only 5 percent of the total dog population in the U.S. Rottweilers contributed to 13 percent of fatalities, while the remaining attacks were attributed to a variety of breeds.
In other pit bull-related trends, nearly 70 percent of pit bull victims fell between the ages of 32 to 76. In 2011 there was also an increase in pit bulls killing their owners; a total of 7 dog owners were killed by their own pit bulls in 2011.
Another bizarre trend was an increase in the amount of off-property fatal attacks. In 2011, 8 fatal dog attacks happened off the dog owner’s property. On a brighter note, the amount of fatalities involving chained dogs continues to decrease.
The report also found that California and Texas had the highest amount of dog bite fatalities.
