A woman says she sees people go around stopped school buses on a daily basis. There is a law stating that drivers are supposed to stop for school buses if their red stop lights are flashing. Susan Cadwell has worried about her daughter’s safety ever since.
Cadwell says she is not worried just about her daughter, who is in a wheelchair, but about all of the children on the bus including the driver, who can only hope people will follow the law and stop.
Cadwell took a video camera with her for 37 days. Within that period of time, she caught 71 traffic violations of
passing buses on camera. Cadwell took action and called the school but and all they did was put signs up to remind drivers to stop. However, that did not stop the speedy drivers.
After the signs were ineffective, the police learned of the reoccurring problem and ordered that the buses have new signage with brighter lights. After the changes were done, the cars began to stop.
Stop for School Buses
In Washington State, it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with red lights flashing. You may be subject to fines if you violate this law.
Keep our children safe and follow the law. Children are very unpredictable and may cross the road, even if there is no crosswalk.
