While many people love the thrill of being on a motorcycle on the open roads, it can also be very dangerous. Therefore, the motorcycle industry continues to develop innovative safety features to keep up with the dangers that the bikes pose against the drivers.

Although it is not required in Washington State, you should have motorcycle insurance in case of an accident. Also when shopping for a new bike, be observant of the safety features that help protect the riders.

Look for these safety features:

• Antilock brake systems: Antilock brakes help the motorcycle driver to brake quickly, which helps to avoid accidents and remain in control of the bike.

• Airbags: As a standard safety feature on cars, motorcycles are beginning to adapt to this technology as well. These help in head-on collisions, just like in cars.

• Design: The construction of the bike may also help keep the driver in charge. Chose a motorcycle that is the appropriate size and weight for you. This includes strength and skill level.

• Anti-theft: Anti-theft systems are actually an option for some motorcycles to rid thieves.

• Lights: Lighting features on bikes serve two very important purposes including the ride’s ability to see when it is cloud or dark out and allow other vehicles to see the rider and give them plenty of space on the roadway.
