On Thursday night, February 24th, all southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were closed near Pacific Avenue in Olympia due to a massive blockage caused by multiple vehicles. The accident was attributed to the sheet of black ice that was on the highway.
There were five semi-trucks, two vehicles, and one Washington State Department of Transportation truck were involved in multiple accidents that eventually blocked the entire roadway.
The Washington State Department of Transportation Truck was applying de-icing product to the road when it slid into one semi-truck. Other semi-trucks crashed into each other as a result, including two vehicles driving in their close vicinity. Two semi's jackknifed along the highway.
No one was injured in these accidents. Washington State Patrol was able to open one of the southbound lanes while the collisions were being investigated.
During times of severe weather conditions, Washington State Patrol and Washington State Department of Transportation urges drivers to avoid highways, and roadways until it is deemed safe. If you have to, drive slowly and cautiously at all times to avoid collisions.
