This is a common concern for many party hosts. You don’t want to take their keys and be their mother, but you do want them to be responsible when leaving your house.
Here are a few hosting tips that could help:
- Creating a setting that is comfortable and easy to socialize. Use soft, not too loud of music and comfortable seating. This creates a setting for conversation rather than shots.
- Food before drinks. If you serve food first, this makes eating more important than drinking.
- Have a responsible bartender making drinks. Do not give someone that title if they are the wild one of the party and push drinking onto people. If you choose a responsible, reliable person as bartender you can count on that person more.
- Open bars equal trouble! Someone needs to watch the consumption level of the guests. Morally and legally, this is your responsibility.
- Pace the drinks – spread out the time in between. A drink an hour is a good guide.
- Push snacks or appetizers. Make sure people continue to munch throughout the party!
- Offer a good array of non-alcohol drinks.
- Respect guest’s decisions to not drink. In fact, praise them! If someone gets out of control I am sure they will be there to help you.
- End your party when you want to end your party. Stop serving drinks and snacks before that time so that people get the hint. Water and coffee are good options for people towards the end of the night.
- If someone appears intoxicate, make sure they have a designated driver!
Your party = your responsibility
