A four-car collision on
state Route 167 just north of the South 277th exit in Kent, Washington, killed a 19-year-old Kent man Saturday morning. The teenager, Matthew S. Johnson was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and pronounced dead at about 6:30 a.m.
Johnson was heading southbound on SR 167 in a 1998 Ford Explorer, according to the State Patrol report. The Explorer collided into a Mazda RX7 that was also headed in the same direction at about 4:30 a.m. Johnson lost control of his car after the impact and was thrown from the Explorer after it flipped over.
The driver of the Mazda, a 23-year-old University Place man, was not hurt during the collision and was released at the scene. The passenger in the Mazda, a 21-year-old Federal Way man, was also released at the scene with no injuries.
An investigation by Patrol detectives is trying to figure out the role two other vehicles may have played in the crash. A 2003 Dodge Neon was totaled after the collision. The driver of the Dodge, a 21-year-old Federal Way man, was also uninjured and released at the scene.
A 1994 Nissan Sentra was also involved in the collision, though the driver did not disclose any personal information to the public.
According to the report, the Explorer was totaled. Both the Mazda and Sentra each had an estimated $1000 in damage. The Sentra was towed from the scene and the Mazda was able to be driven from the scene of the accident.
All drivers involved in the collision were said to be wearing their seatbelts. The deceased teenage driver was the only one who was not wearing his seatbelt.
It took nearly four hours to clear the crash from the highway lanes, according to the WSDOT.
