Heather Hurd, 26-year-old victim of a texting while driving man died at the scene of the accident, after being hit by a tractor-trailer traveling 65 miles per hour hit Hurd’s car. The driver did not apply his brakes at all. He crashed into eight other vehicles waiting at the stop light.
Hurd and her fiancé Patrick, were on their way to have a meeting with a wedding planner at Disney, to discuss their dream ceremony.
The federal government estimated that by 2007 11 percent of drivers were talking on their phones at any given time. Harvard University researchers have estimated that drivers using cell phones are causing more than 2,500 or more fatal crashes a year and more than 500,000 injury accidents annually. In 2008, distracted driving motor vehicle accidents killed nearly 6,000 Americans.

(1) A person operating a moving motor vehicle who, by means of an electronic wireless communications device, sends, reads, or writes a text message, is guilty of a traffic infraction. A person does not send, read, or write a text message when he or she reads, selects, or enters a phone number or name in a wireless communications device for the purpose of making a phone call. See RCW 46.61.668.
