A sponge was left inside a man during open heart surgery and allegedly died as a result of complications. The fatal surgical mistake caused the family to file a
wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of their loved one.
The 89-year-old man died just three days after surgery. The
surgical sponge was apparently left in his body after a bypass and heart valve replacement, according to the complaint. The victim died of bleeding problems during an operation to remove the sponge.
The defendant, the operating doctor, claims they are not blame for his death, suggesting it was his existing health conditions that ultimately caused his death.
Medical malpractice lawsuits are commonly associated with wrongful death. Medical malpractice is professional negligence by act or omission by a health care provider (doctor, nurse, anesthesiologist, plastic surgeon, pharmacist, medical technician, etc.) in which care provided deviates from accepted standards of practice in the medical community and causes injury or death to the patient.
Unfortunately, these medical mistakes occur more frequently that most patients would like to know about. The frightening part is that most of these lawsuits are settled confidentially and there is little to no trace of the doctor’s mistake.
On the flip side, many people claim to be victims of medical negligence, when the doctor was in fact not at fault.
In cases, such as this one where a surgical sponge was left in the body, are usually not discovered for many years. They are usually found after the victim suffers from unexplained symptoms.
