There are four strategies of the plan including engineering, enforcement, education and emergency medical service. Enforcement is responsible for police agencies at all levels.
Under Target Zero, state troopers, county sheriff’s deputies, city and tribal police officers will focus on those violations: driving while impaired, speeding and failure to wear a seat belt.
Thirty-five police agencies launched Target Zero Teams in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Each team has a goal of reducing the number of
deaths caused by impaired drivers.
Locations have been mapped where
fatal and serious injury crashes have occurred, along with DUI arrests. They’ve created enforcement zones to guide officers.
Target Zero Zones have been identified through GIS Analysis and ranked on the following features:
-Areas were first calculated by density of Impaired Fatal Collisions between 2005 and 2009.
-Areas were categorized by the amount of accident within each Zone. Data from each Zone is extracted out and summarized for details specific to that Zone: seat belt use, speed, day of week, time of day, BAC levels, and more.
- Zones will be supervised for changes in times, behavior, and monitored activity within and surrounding the area.
King County Zones: Auburn, Federal Way, Covington, Renton, South Seattle, Downtown, and Redmond.
Pierce County Zones: Tacoma, Puyallup, Lakewood, and Fife Snohomish County Zones: Stanwood, Arlington, Warm Beach, Marysville, and Mill Creek
