A man sustained a car accident injury just before six a.m. Sunday on State Route 3 near Shelton.

Thomas Moore, a Grapeview resident, sustained a broken arm and head injury. He was treated at Mason General Hospital in Shelton and was later taken to Harborview Medical Center.

According to the Washington State Patrol, Moore fell asleep while driving his 2006 Chevrolet Colorado southbound on State Route 3 about seven miles north of Shelton and hit a stump.

Moore will face a charge of second-degree negligent driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) estimates that nearly 100,000 police-reported crashes each year attribute drowsiness or fatigue as the main cause of the accident. Of those accidents, there were about 1,500 fatalities and 71,000 injuries reported each year.
