If you haven't already heard, throughout this week, May 16- 22, National Dog Bite Prevention Week has been taking place and thus far it has been a hit. With help from private companies such as the National Humane Society as well as goverment backing from the United States Postal Service, the word has gotten out about the importance of preventing dog bite injuries and has been well received.

Dog bites are one of the most common injuries in the United States with an estimated 4.5 million bites per year, but to be honest no one really knows because of the number of bites that go unreported. Because of the number of people who have or know someone who has been bitten by a dog is so high, the impact Dog Bite Prevention Week has also been high.

It is no secret that postal workers are at a higher risk for dog bites than most occupations and a result the United States Postal Service have played a major role in helping spread the word on ways to prevent dog bite injuries as well as the importance of the dog owners to take the proper steps to ensure that their pet does not bite anyone. Some common suggestions include having your pet professionally trained, making sure that your pet has been socialized around other people, and never let your pet just run free with other people or dogs around.
