No, not all victims of spinal cord injuries use a wheelchair. Low C-level injuries and below usually allow the person to use a manual chair. Manual chairs are preferred because they cost less, weigh less, and are more portable than wheelchairs. If a person needs a power chair, they can be much more independent therefore many injured people would rather use them regardless of the limitations. There are advantages and disadvantages of both situations.
Some people are able to use braces and crutches. These mobility options don’t suggest that the person will never use a wheelchair in their life. Many people who use braces or crutches still like to use wheelchairs for traveling longer distances. However, the
therapeutic and activity levels allowed by standing or walking briefly may make braces a reasonable alternative for some people. Preference is a huge part of it.
Wheelchair users aren't always in them, as you may think they are. They can still do many activities, including: driving, swimming, flying planes, skiing, and other activities out of their chair. And of course, people who use wheelchairs don't sleep in their wheel chair, they sleep in a bed. It seems obvious, but some people believe wheel chair users are unable to function without being in one.
