A critical child injury occurred Thursday morning when a 14 year old boy was walking to school near the Mukilteo Speedway.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center and remains there in critical condition.

According to Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, the boy, who was thought to have been jay-walking, was hit by a car around seven in the morning while on his way to school.

Lieutenant Rodney Rochon of the Sheriff's Office Traffic Division said in the mornings, students are going to school in the dark and oftentimes come home at dusk; both times of limited visibility.

Rochon says that especially during this time of year, it's extremely important that drivers keep well-maintained cars, including working headlights and to drive speeds that are appropriate for the conditions. Pedestrians also need to pay attention to traffic, stay off cell phones when walking and wear light or reflective clothing if possible.
