It’s 4th of July – go take a bike ride in the most bike friendly state!Washington State was named most bike-friendly state from the League of American Bicyclists – its fourth year in a row to be given this title.
According to the league, this award is categorized as a state that “promotes cycling through legislation, policies, programs, and by creating new places to ride, educating motorists and cyclists, and encouraging people to bike for transportation and recreation.”
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) states that they support biking in various ways. Of the several methods, a Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Grant Program helps to give money to high-risk locations for bikers.
WSDOT measures the amount of cyclists on the roads in order to track the progress, environmentally and statewide. In 2009, there were a recorded 9,600
bicyclists on the roadways. In 2010, the number nearly tripled – 16,000 bicyclists.
While Washington State ranked very high on many categories for cyclists, it received a “D” on infrastructure. Cyclists and pedestrians believe that this is because too much government funding is going toward car accommodation instead of safety improvements, such as bike lanes.
We still have a lot more room for improvement, but as Washington State residents, we should be very proud to know that our community is working together to live more sustainable and striving to become more “green.”
Davis Law Group wants to remind you that the 4th of July can be a very dangerous time on the roadways. Please drive carefully and responsibly. Always know your surroundings and watch out for bicyclists.
