PORT ANGELES, WA - A 77-year-old woman backed her car through a restaurant wall and injured three people sitting in a booth.
19-year-old Elisabeth N. Hagerman was taken to the Olympic Medical Center at Port Angeles with a broken arm and internal bleeding. The girl's mother, 42-year-old Huberta Meadows, was treated and discharged from the center after Friday's accident. Another woman, Juana Argyropoulos, 50, also was treated and discharged.
The driver, Maria Sands, was not injured when her Lincoln Town Car when it plunged through the brick wall. More than half of the length of the Town Car came into the restaurant -- the Fairmount Italian Restaurant. Sands was not cited. A passenger in the car, Gordon Cole, was not injured.
The police report that Sands backed up in her vehicle and swung the car into a circle. There was no reason given why Sands could not stop her car. Sands then drove her vehicle backwards over a distance of 200 feet before it struck the brick wall at a fairly high rate of speed -- enough speed to cause the vehicle to impale through the brick wall.
The three injured peoplel undoubtedy suffered a tremendous scare. One minute you're eating a nice meal, the next your on the floor looking up at the rear bumper of Town Car. That's assuming that neither person lost consciousness, which might have very well occurred given the mechanics of the crash.
