A teenager lost his arm after engaging in a trill-seeking spree with his friends, by running along the top of a moving train.
The 13-year-old and his friends were jumping from coach to coach when he accidentally touched a live high-voltage power cable that sent thousands of direct current volts through his body, causing him to be thrown off the roof of the train.
Surgeons had no choice but to
amputate his arm. “I almost died. I will never play on a train again,” the young boy told his mother when she visited him in hospital.
The surgeon called into to shape a stump on his
amputated upper arm, decided to discuss the accident in order to raise awareness about the dangers of this activity.
Train-surfing has been a phenomenon that many teenagers participate in – without considering the risk.
The boy admitted to participating in the activity for three years.
“I have done it many times. It’s exciting,” he said.
His doctor said that the boy is lucky to be alive.
“The amount of damage he had, many things could have killed him… He could have had kidney or heart failure. But age was on his side as well as early intervention.”
Thubelihle lost muscles, vessels and even nerves. He had also lost muscles on his back, and he has a burn mark on his head.
The doctor carried out a
further amputation, but saved as much length on his patient’s arm as he could.
