Type: Bicycle Incident
Date: February 12, 2010, 02/12/10
Location: Ballard
Just a few months after the city of Seattle was sued by industrial landowners regarding an extension of the Burke-Gillman trail in Ballard, the city is once again in trouble with bicyclists who blame the city for failing to "connect the missing link," which caused their bicycle accident injuries.
The area of controversy is in an industrial area of Ballard between two sections of the trail which is popular with bicyclists and runners alike.
Five bicyclists have now filed a lawsuit stating that the "missing link" of the trail between 28th Avenue NW and 11th Avenue NW have caused them to crash while riding there. Cyclists say that by the city's failing to finish the trail, they are ignoring the danger from old railroad tracks crossing the road.
The lawsuit presents a range of injuries including a broken hip, teeth and severe cuts on one bicyclist's face. The bicyclists want compensation for their injuries.
The effort to finish the trail has been put on hold to await the decision in the lawsuit filed by the landowners, who claimed the city's environmental review failed to take into consideration the impact the trail's expansion would have on the businesses in that area.
The trail which begins near Golden Gardens Park in Ballard, runs along the Lake Washington Ship Canal, cuts north at the University of Washington and continues on to Kenmore.
