AT&T launched the DriveMode mobile application as part of its campaign against texting while driving. The “It Can Wait” campaign is fighting against irresponsible driving habits, such as texting.
The new safety mobile app automatically sends a customizable reply to an incoming text, telling the sender that the user is driving and cannot respond. It can also be used to disable emails and calls while driving.
The service provider wants to educate and equip wireless customers with the tools they need to state safe on the roadways.
“We’re hoping to reach new and experienced drivers alike to generate a change in behavior and underscore our message that, when it comes to texting and driving, it can – and should – wait,” said Charlene Lake, AT&T public affairs chief sustainability officer and senior vice president.
The app is available for BlackBerry users but will be expanded in coming months.
The NHTSA statistics show that 20 percent of injury accidents involved
distracted driving and of those fatal accidents – 995 involved cell phones as the distraction.
