
The amount of bicycle accidents and fatalities in the Seattle area has caused residents question their safety. Across the state of Washington, ten bicyclists have died this year.
The recent death of the Jimmy John’s worker over the weekend, who was hit by a car while
riding his bicycle to deliver a sandwich, has raised some serious questions.
"Drivers look for vehicles; they don't look for bikes," bike commuter Bill Anderson said. "You have to be a vigilant rider and more aware of your surroundings."
Another
bicyclist died last week after accidentally falling down a staircase. He was a well-known barista at Vivace coffeehouse in South Lake Union.
The Cascade Bicycle Club has planned a news conference on Wednesday to discuss the need for infrastructure improvement along with a greater need for community among cyclists, motorists and pedestrians. Everyone needs to learn to share the road.
While bicycle accidents have increased this year, Washington is ranked by the League of American Cyclists as first in safety programs.
