A 17 year old man was killed and four others seriously injured while traveling on Highway 2 between Gold Bar and Index in Washington State on Friday afternoon. The collision occurred when an SUV carrying three 17 year olds crossed the center line and collided head on with a vehicle traveling in the oncoming lane. One of the 17 year olds in the SUV died in the collision.
This is not the first time a serious accident has occurred on Highway 2. There has been debate among Washington legislators and politicians on whether the State should fund an expensive improvement plan to make Highway 2 safer for the traveling public.
Governor Christine Gregoire previously unveiled a $3.6 million highway-safety plan, only weeks after personally traveling the road. Highway 2 is commonly referred to as the "Highway of Death." Gregoire had also met with activists who have called for Highway 2 improvements for years.
DOT officials say that a combination of new signs, wider rumble strips with double striping and increased law enforcement between Monroe and Gold Bar should dramatically lower the fatality rate on Highway 2. This area is the same location where the recent wrongful death car accident occurred on Friday afternoon.
Drivers should be especially cautious when traveling on Highway 2, particularly during the winter months when snow and rain can make driving conditions even more difficult. The wrongful death car accident rate increases dramatically during these periods.
