Another States Passes a Law to Prevent Brain Injuries

brain injury association of america
Alabama is taking another step toward preventing brain injuries. A state law took effect in June that will forbid young athletes from playing if a concussion is suspected. Under the law, parents and coaches are required to learn about the dangers of concussions and doesn’t allow any young athlete to play until they have received permission from a doctor.

Although this law has formally passed, many people still are not aware of its existence.
Majority of the nurses at a workshop at a local Children’s Hospital had never heard of it.

Hospitals are creating a concussion center that will provide medical care for children and educate those who need information on brain injuries. The treatment for concussions has also been updated, asking those who suffer from one to rest more.

Untreated concussions can lead to long term issues, pertaining to mental skills. There have also been new laws regarding NFL and the NCAA.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), brain damage and other types of head injuries result of direct trauma to the skull and/or rapid acceleration and deceleration of the brain, including shearing (tearing) of nerve fibers, contusion (bruising) of the brain tissue against the skull, brain stem injuries, and edema (swelling). Davis Law Group is a metro Seattle personal injury law firm that specializes in handling personal injury claims involving brain injuries.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that at least 5.3 million Americans, approximately 2% of the U.S. population, currently have a long-term or lifelong need for help to perform activities of daily living as a result of TBI. Also, TBI contributes to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability annually. The new law in the state of Washington will take important first steps in providing some funding of services. More importantly, it will organize (for the first time) a Strategic Partnership Advisory Council to identify gaps in services and how to fix it so that effective treatment and services are provided to those struggling with TBI and its aftermath.
