Airbags Not a Risk to Pregnant Women | Personal Accident Injury Lawyer

According to Reuters Health, a new study has found that the impact of an airbag does not seem to raise the risk of pregnancy complications for pregnant women involved in a car accident.

A new study analyzed data from 3,348 accidents between 2002 and 2005. The study found no evidence of a higher risk of pregnancy complications for women involved in a crash where an airbag deployed, like placental detachment from the uterine wall, fetal distress and cesarean deliveries.

Groups like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) have been advising pregnant women not to deactivate their airbags because they do save lives and a lap and shoulder belt should always be worn with the lap belt sitting below the belly and the shoulder belt across the center of the chest.

Dr. Melissa A. Schiff, a professor at the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle says pregnant women should follow the advice of ACOG but that seatbelts are the best protection in a car accident.

Accident statistics state that about 33,000 pregnant women are involved in car accidents every year. These accidents are the leading cause of fetal death.
