Age, Gender and Brain Injury Survival Factors | Brain Injury Lawyer

After collecting data from over 2,300 patients of all ages and gender, the numbers indicate that gender and age do in fact influence the outcome of serious brain injury. Young girls, specifically under 10 years of age, are four times more likely to die from head injuries than boys of the same age.

A big reason for the major difference between the two genders is hormones. Higher levels of testosterone in boys may potentially offer increased for brain mass through added bulk, similar to the way that testosterone adds bulk to muscles, For young girls, because they have increased levels of estrogen, seem to be especially vulnerable to head injury.

Another interesting pattern that the data has illustrated is that this "gender gap" is reversed for older individuals. Dr. Azadeh Farin, a researcher at the University of California, San Diego says "women in their 50's, 60's, or 70's" are roughly twice as likely to survive traumatic brain injuries in the same age group. Dr. Farin did not specify the reason why women in older age group are more likely to survive a traumatic brain injury than men.
