Brian Fairbrother, barista and manager at Espresso Vivance, died of head injuries after a fatal bicycle accident yesterday. Fairbrother was riding his bike on August 30 when he crashed on stairs near 1177 Fairview Ave. N.
He was found unconscious but still breathing when medics arrived to the scene, and immediately took him to Harborview Medical Center. He was lying face down with a helmet lying near him. He later died at the hospital.
The 50-year-old man was riding northbound on the street’s side walk. Detectives are investigating the
bike accident.
At the location of the accident, cyclists are supposed to take a fork in the sidewalk that leads to a bike lane on the road. However, Fairbrother went straight and came upon stairs that led to a floating dock.
Seattle Department of Transportation spokesman Rick Sheridan said the city has not received complaints about that area and is not aware of previous incidents involving the steps.
"We'll review the areas on both sides of the pedestrian bridge to determine whether additional signage or markings would be beneficial," he said. "Our hearts go out to the cyclist's family and friends. This incident does reinforce those cyclists unfamiliar with a trail or sidewalk need to ride with caution."
Davis Law Group is deeply saddened to hear of
another fatal bicycle accident. We send sincere condolences to the friends and family of the victim. Brian seemed like an all-around great guy.
"Having him here made you want to linger. He brought a sense of community," a regular at the coffee shop said.
