A recent study found that Interstate 405 Southbound between WA 520 at NE 14th Street (Exit 14) and SE Coal Creek Parkway (Exit 10) was the most congested roadways in the metro Seattle area in 2010. The corridor ranks #64 nationally. During uncongested times it takes as little as 5 minutes to travel this 4.5 mile stretch of roadway. But during peak commute hours it can take as much as 13 minutes. And between 5pm and 6pm on Thursdays, this roadway’s worst hour, it can take up to 18 minutes to travel this short distance.
Where there is smoke there is fire. And where there is roadway congestion there are motor vehicle accidents. Stop-and-go traffic and frustrated commuters don’t mix well with cell phones, computers, and texting while driving. It is no coincidence that this area is the site of numerous collisions each year.
