A 25-year-old woman died after a nurse overmedicated her in the recovery room following a gall bladder surgery in a Washington State hospital. When she returned to the hospital room, the nurse on duty never took her pulse, or even checked on her while she attempted to breathe. She quickly lapsed into a coma and die three days later.
Her family filed a
medical malpractice/wrongful death lawsuit against the agency for temporary nurse who looked after the woman. The settlement amount was undisclosed.
What is Medical Malpractice?
Medical malpractice is professional negligence by act or omission by a health care provider (doctor, nurse, anesthesiologist, plastic surgeon, pharmacist, medical technician, etc.) in which care provided deviates from accepted standards of practice in the medical community and causes injury or death to the patient. It is the failure of a medical professional or a medical facility to provide a minimum standard of care in the areas in which the medical professional or medical facility specializes.
