October 19-23rd is National School Bus Safety Week, and schools all over the nation are working to ensure the safety of our children.
This year the theme is "Avoid Harm, Obey the Stop Arm," the American School Bus Council believes the theme fits in well with school bus safety and provides the opportunity for drivers to be reminded that they are also responsible in keeping our children safe on the bus and on the roads.
For several years, Washington State Patrol has used an Electronic Vehicle Inspection Report from Zonar Systems, that utilizes RFID technology, to record data and ensure no defects are found on the buses. The EVIR has a 99.98 percent success rate.
Washington State has more than 10,100 school buses and this week in Seattle, demonstrations of the excellent school bus inspection program that keeps more than 500,000 children who ride the buses safe from any defects were shown to the public and media.
According to national school bus accident statistics, since 1990, 1,450 people were killed in school bus accidents, but of those 1,450 people, only 9 percent were riding in the school bus.
Although we take pride in the safety of our buses, it is important to know your options if there is ever an injury on the school bus. If you have any questions regarding a school bus accident or mass transit accident of any kind, it may be in your best interest to speak with an experienced Seattle transit accident lawyer.
Type: Bus Accident
Location: Clallam Transit Route No. 14 bus on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles, Washington.
A Clallam Transit bus driver Jimie Richmond saved the lives of his passengers when he swerved to avoid an oncoming pickup truck that crossed over the center line. The truck and the bus sill collided, but the driver's quick reaction may have prevented the accident from being much worse.
The bus driver has scrapes, bruises, a broken left leg, lost one tooth, and injured his left hand. Brandon K. Foth, the driver of the pickup truck, suffered serious injuries and is being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Three bus passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from a local hospital.
In such cases, it would be in the best interest of bus accident victims and/or their families to contact and consult an experienced Washington personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation, sort out the facts of the case, identify the negligent parties and hold them accountable.
Date: June 29, 2009
Location: Seattle, Washington. Rainier Valley
Type: Mass Transit Accidents
A motorist was injured on Monday, June 29th, in a collision with a Sound Transit light-rail train in Rainier Valley, the third incident sine frequent train testing began there this spring. The crash took place just after 5 p.m. next to the Othello light-rail station in Southeast Seattle. The car was heading south and made a left turn, against a red light, from MLK Way onto Myrtle as the train traveled south in the median of MLK. The driver of the car, a man in his 70s, was taken by ambulance to a near by hospital, suffering minor injuries. Emergency crews tore the roof off of his car to remove him.
The train was slowing down to approach the station when it T-boned the car. The crash caused only minor damage to a front panel on the train. The wreck was cleared around 6:30 and the train continued its testing. Sound Transit is testing its trains along the 14-mile route from downtown Seattle to Tukwila, in preparation for service that begins on July 18th.
This is the third incident involving a test train in Rainer Valley, where tracks run in a median at street level. Two of them were crashes with cars, and in one case, a person walked into the train.
Sound Transit officials claim their rail project has improved overall safety on MLK Way, by eliminating two-way left-turn lanes that used to play a major role in motorist and pedestrian injuries. Many think that the rail sections should have crossing gates but sound transit argues that trains are going at the normal traffic speed of 35 mph or less so this would not be necessary. An environmental-impact statement predicted 29 car-train collisions per year, based on data in other cities, but transit officials said actual numbers would be less in Seattle because of improved warning signals and road signs.
Critics of the project urged local politicians not to mix light rail with street traffic, though many U.S. cities, including Portland, run trains along arterial streets.
