While walking across New Brooklyn Road on Bainbridge Island on Saturday, a 70-year-old man named Mervyn Richardson was struck and killed by a pickup truck. He was hit around 11:10am and was pronounced dead at the scene by Kitsap County officials. The driver was cooperative with authorities and it has been confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision.
Pedestrian Fatality StatisticsSpecifically, 4,749 pedestrians were reported to have been killed in motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2003.2 These deaths accounted for 11 percent of the 42,643 motor vehicle deaths nationwide that year. An estimated 70,000 pedestrians were injured or killed in motor vehicle collisions, which represents 2 percent of the 2.9 million total persons injured in traffic crashes.
Washington State Pedestrian LawThe operator of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stopping, if need be to so yield to any pedestrian, but no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield.
